NASA Mighty Eagle Lunar Lander

Sometimes you never know who is going to be on the other end of the phone. We recently received a call from NASA who needed our urgent help – they asked us to develop an auxiliary braking mechanism for use in the testing of their Mighty Eagle Lunar Lander module. We were honoured to be asked and created a custom solution based on our patented eddy current braking technology. Just another day at Holmes Solutions.

Before NASA started testing their new unmanned lunar lander module they had to make sure their bases were covered. During a review they identified that failure of the guidance system could result in a very expensive accident with their one-off prototype. So they asked us to prevent disaster by creating a secondary braking mechanism based around our eddy current braking technology. NASA were already fans of our eddy current braking technology having awarded us their Brass Ring of Innovation the previous year. We developed a one-off braking system that would allow them to complete their testing with confidence. As luck would have it, the guidance system on the Lunar Lander worked as intended and our hard work was never required to operate!
